Atrion sponsors Tech Collective’s Girls Reaching Remarkable Levels (GRRL Tech) Interactive Career Expo
2/2/2007
Warwick, RI – February 2, 2007 - Nobody can explain it. People shake their heads and wonder. Researchers have pried into every area that covers this topic, and still, nobody has an answer. Why aren’t teenage girls involved in the technologies like their male counterparts? Go down the list of who’s who in science, technology, math, engineering, biology and other technical related fields, and it is easy to see that it is dominated by males. It’s a phenomena that can’t readily be explained, but can be changed. There is one group that is hoping to do just that, and they are working here in Rhode Island.

For the sixth consecutive year, women leaders from the educational and business communities will join forces to enlighten female high school juniors and sophomores, and their teachers to the myriad of opportunities in the fields of science, math, engineering and other related technologies. This collaborative event is called GRRL Tech, and is sponsored by Tech Collective, Atrion Networking, Cisco Systems and a host of other technology and education related organizations. Held at Roger Williams University’s Bristol campus on March 9, 2007 GRRL Tech will raise the awareness of the career potentials in the fields of Computer Information Systems, Engineering, Theatre, Marine Biology, Environmental Engineering, Architecture, and more, all presented by senior-level women from the sponsor organizations.

“I wish I had this opportunity when I was their age” states Shiri Frydrich-Barniv, a Solutions Architect at Atrion who will lead interactive sessions aboard the Cisco Systems NOW Van. “What a fantastic way for women to reach out to high school girls who are formulating their career options before entering college”, Shiri adds.

This is a unique opportunity for girls to spend a day engaged in workshops with successful women learning about a broad range of subject areas where traditionally they may not have been exposed to. Following the workshops, the students will attend a panel discussion where they can ask questions, seek advice and mentoring, as well as talk one-to-one with the advisory panel.

“Atrion is proud to be an active participant in this technology expo. Because our company is comprised of so many talented people, both male and female, we encourage young people to find out more about the vast opportunities in the technologies, not just ours”, notes Melissa DelPrete, Atrion’s Director of Marketing. Joining Shiri and Melissa from Atrion will be Marianne Caserta, Chief Financial Officer; Jodi Higgins, Project Manager and Jennifer Pate, Controller.

Atrion has been an active sponsor with the Tech Collective for many years, actively engaging their staff, partners and clients in many of Tech Collective’s initiatives. This event encourages Atrion’s female specialists an opportunity to openly share their experiences and knowledge with the next generation of women who enter the technology fields.
